In March 2024, the European Union imposed a historic fine of EUR 1.8 billion on Apple, marking the first time the company was fined for violating EU antitrust rules. This decision comes after a complaint by Spotify, which accused Apple of exploiting its App Store to hinder competition in the music streaming market.
The Spotify Complaint
Spotify, in 2019, formally sued Apple, claiming that App Store policies prevent music streaming services from informing users about alternative payment options to the App Store.
The European Commission, after a very long analysis, recently found that these restrictions constituted unfair trading conditions and an abuse of Apple’s dominant position, restricting consumer choice and influencing price increases due to the high fees imposed on developers.
